Socktober is here, and it starts with one pair
Socktober is here, and it starts with one pair A 16-year-old walked into foster care wearing socks two sizes too small. When kids are taken away from their homes, they usually don’t have time to grab their stuff. They might not even have a chance to pack a bag or bring their favorite clothes. A lot of the time, they show up with just the clothes on their back. Sometimes, they don’t even have the essentials – it’s like they’re starting from scratch.
For many of us, putting on a fresh pair of socks is something we do without a second thought. But for a kid who’s had their whole life turned upside down, something as simple as a warm, clean pair of socks can be a huge deal – it’s not just about keeping their feet warm, it’s about feeling dignified and knowing that someone is looking out for them.
That is why, starting today, October is Socktober at Foster Love. Why socks are the most requested item in foster care When you ask foster care agencies what they need the most, you’ll often get the same response every year. The number one item that kids in foster care need is something quite simple: socks
It’s surprising that socks are the most requested item, yet they are also one of the least donated. When you think about it, it’s pretty simple. Kids grow out of their clothes quickly, and when they move from one home to another, they usually can’t take much with them. People often donate coats and shirts, but new socks are something that gets forgotten. And let’s be real, hygiene is important – socks are one of those things that should always be brand new. Â
There’s always a need for help. Right now, over 300,000 kids are in foster care in the US. Every single day, these kids need basic things like socks. It’s not just about being comfortable, though – it’s about giving them a better chance in life. Sadly, more than half of the people who are homeless have been in foster care at some point. That’s why it’s so important to help these kids with their basic needs from the start. “That I mattered”: what a new pair of socks really gives It’s easy to underestimate a single pair of socks.Â
"Getting something new made me feel special, like I was important and deserved good things."
Socks give warmth during the cold months ahead, support healthy feet, and ease some of the anxiety of moving from home to home. Most importantly, they tell a child: someone cares about you. Socktober 2026: 57,500 pairs of Bombas socks for foster youth This October, Foster Love is teaming up with Bombas to give 57,500 brand new pairs of socks to kids and teens in foster care all over the country. Kids deserve the best, just like we do. That’s why Bombas socks are a great choice for them – they’re made to be really comfortable, with extra cushioning to make their feet feel happy, arch support to help them walk and run around, and special materials that keep their feet dry. We wouldn’t settle for less for ourselves, so whyshould they have to?Â
Be the reason a child feels cared for When a child goes into foster care, their whole world can be turned upside down – they might lose their home, their routine, and almost everything that’s familiar to them, all in just one day. There’s no way to undo the hurt and disruption they’ve experienced. However, we can try to make things a little easier for them by making sure they have one less thing to worry about, something that every child deserves. A warm pair of socks won’t fix everything. It can, however, be one small reminder that someone out there is thinking of them. Help us reach 57,500 pairs this Socktober.
