Anthony’s Path From Foster Care to a SkillsUSA 1st Place Winner
Anthony’s journey from foster care to winning first place at the SkillsUSA regional competition is a powerful example of how determination, mentorship, and opportunity can open new doors. With the help of the American Industries Scholarship, supportive mentors, and his hard work, Anthony is creating a bright future in electrical work.
Finding Direction at EVIT
Anthony entered foster care at age 15 and moved to Arizona, where he eventually found a home at HOPE Tech, a residential program for foster youth. It was through HOPE Tech that he was introduced to the East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT), where his journey in electrical training began.Today, Anthony works as a janitor on the campus, staying active in the EVIT community and giving back wherever he can.
Receiving His Scholarship
At EVIT, Anthony found structure, purpose, and support. With the guidance of Mr. McCoy, EVIT’s director, and two professors who became mentors, he began to build a plan for his future.Their support extended beyond the classroom, helping Anthony learn technical electrical skills and real-world leadership tools.
“This scholarship… it really really shows that someone cares,” he said. “It just provides that, like, in the back of your mind, that assurance that people actually are rooting for you.”
What the Scholarship Meant to Him
Anthony was awarded the American Industries Scholarship, and the support made a lasting impact.
$12,000 to some people may not seem like a lot, but to foster kids, that’s probably more than they’ve ever had in their life,” Anthony shared. “This scholarship, like, it really really shows that someone cares… it provides that, like, in the back of your mind, that assurance that people actually are rooting for you.
While the scholarship gave Anthony a boost, it was his own drive and dedication that brought him to this moment. He continues to work hard, stay focused, and build relationships with mentors and peers who believe in him.
Working Hard and Standing Out
Through the Arizona Friends of Foster Care Foundation’s Keys to Success Program, Anthony received one-on-one coaching to support his professional growth. This mentorship gave him the tools and confidence to apply for apprenticeships, connect with others in his field, and develop a strong foundation for independence.
Living at HOPE Tech and working as a janitor on campus, Anthony is fully immersed in the EVIT community. He even encouraged other students from HOPE Tech to apply for the American Industries Scholarship—demonstrating his leadership and commitment to lifting others up as he climbs.
A SkillsUSA Winner with Big Plans
Thanks to his talent and work ethic, Anthony won first place in the SkillsUSA regional competition. This earned him a spot at the national competition in Atlanta, Georgia.
He also applied and was accepted into an apprenticeship with Tech Electrical in Arizona, which will begin next year. To prepare, Anthony worked closely with a mentor at EVIT and made a big purchase to complete his tool list.
Driven by Family and Community
Anthony still talks to his mom, who lives in Georgia. She was the first person he called when he got the scholarship. His long-term goal is to return to Georgia one day to be closer to her.
His long-term goal is to build a strong career so he can move back and be near her again.
Anthony continues to lead by example. He’s encouraged other students at HOPE Tech to apply for the scholarship, showing his dedication to helping others succeed, too.
Now, Anthony is building a future filled with possibility and purpose—and he’s showing other foster youth that they can do the same.
