Becky and her husband started the foster to adopt process back in 2015. They both knew that they wanted to be foster parents from the beginning. Becky was exposed to the different processes very early on. Her best friend in kindergarten was adopted and her friend’s parents also fostered their niece and nephew. A few years into their marriage they decided to become licensed foster parents. In 2017 they began fostering their future daughter and by April 2018 they officially became her parents. They agree that every moment raising her is worth it in the end.
The Hard Truths Behind the Foster to Adopt Process
Despite fostering her for so long, Becky and her husband always had the fear of a biological family member claiming their right to take custody of her. They knew the pain of having to separate from a child since they are foster parents. But the feeling that came with the separation was something they didn’t want to feel with her.
Making it through the process made their court date so much better. Becky remembers that their day in court came up so fast. She just tried to remember as much as she could because this is the day she could finally say she had a daughter. The couple finally made their forever family.
Love Openly and Fully
Becky encourages anyone who is considering adoption to do it! There are different forms of adoption including fostering. The system needs more people who can provide loving homes.
For those who fear love and loss, Becky comments on how those types of people make the best foster parents. In her words she says,
I know from experience that it is heart-breaking to love these kids and then have them leave your home, but they need to be in a home, at least once in their lives, where they experience love. I would rather let my heart get broken every time a child leaves, even though it hurts so much, than to have them live in a home where no one loves them.
