Foster to adopt in Texas may be a different process from other states but the pull of love is always the same. Making the decision to foster children isn’t an easy one, especially for a single teacher. Lisa made the life-changing decision to become a foster parent back in 2015. Her first placement happened in 2016 with a 10-month-old girl named Via. A temporary placement soon began to look like a permanent option. Unfortunately, Via’s bio parents hadn’t taken the proper steps to reunify with her.
First Placements
A few months into her first placement Lisa received the news that Via’s bio mom became pregnant again and would most likely not be able to maintain custody of the newborn.
She didn’t know whether or not she would be able to handle another child considering she only had room for Via at home. This became a tough decision. Either Lisa opens her home to Via’s brother or she agrees to their rehoming.
The Choice to Foster to Adopt in Texas
After much consideration, Lisa finally decided that she needed to have both kids in her life. She called the social worker to let her know that she decided to adopt both kids. Within 24 hours of that call, Via’s mom gave birth to her new brother. Two weeks later Lisa brought home the baby boy and finally had her family complete.
Lisa didn’t begin fostering with the intention to adopt. Being a full-time teacher kept her pretty busy but she still wanted to help kids anyway she could. Taking in Via, and later her younger brother, as her first placement worked out perfectly in the end.
Kind Words of Advice
Some advice Lisa has for potential foster/adoptive parents is to be prepared for anything. Sticking through the uncertainty of the process is worth it in the end. Through it all, you have to remember that everything is to protect the kids. Sometimes things don’t work out in the end but the best you can do is to be there for the kids as much as you can.
