Meet Future Leaders in Welding Trade School Programs

The welding trade offers a path to independence, self-expression, and pride in craftsmanship. Thanks to support from the American Industries Scholarship and the BrandSource scholarship, five resilient students from foster care are leaping into welding trade school, each carrying a story of determination and purpose.

Josiah brandsource Josiah – San Bernardino Valley College

Josiah has always loved working with his hands, but welding opened the door to something deeper. “Welding lets me build things that last and hopefully, inspire,” he says. Raised in and out of foster care, Josiah now studies multiple welding processes and dreams of opening his own shop. He’s focused on earning certifications and saving for equipment and transportation so he can serve his community and support his younger siblings.

Ryder – Hobart Institute of Welding Technology

Welding started as a spark of curiosity for Ryder, but it soon became a passion. “My adopted dad introduced me to welding, and it opened up something in me I didn’t know I had,” he says. After growing up in care, Ryder now uses welding to express himself through metal artwork and furniture. He dreams of owning land, running a welding business, and living independently while showcasing his creativity.

Edgar AIS winner Edgar – Austin Community College

For Edgar, welding means freedom and control. “Welding lets me feel powerful and in control,” he shares. Inspired by tradesmen in his church and community, he’s now mastering stick welding (SMAW) and working toward launching his own business. Having grown up in care across Texas, Edgar sees welding as a way to create long-term stability and build something of his own, on his terms.

Delton – Western Welding Academy

Delton set a goal to graduate high school early so he could jumpstart his welding career. “All of my experiences make me who I am… I want to become the best person I can be,” he says. Raised by his grandparents, Delton discovered welding through community projects and car repairs. Now, he’s training in precision fabrication and dreams of one day owning a welding business that blends utility with creative design.

These students are proving that with the right tools and support, anything is possible. The welding trade school journey is just the beginning.
